UICT Awareness was a community started by me on orkut (which got hacked and is now owned by some random guy!). I then felt the need to let the Head of the Student’s Body know about this. Here is a letter convincing him about our views and the future prospects we envision and to seek his permission to work on them.
UICT Awareness Forum
We present to you a small attempt made on the behalf of the students on a matter that seemed quite important to one and all. This matter that is described here was taken up because of the concern of many students over the stated issue. All the work has been done earnestly and selflessly. Our aim is to make UICT recognized not only in the chemical circles but also in the general public. Our aim is to achieve for UICT a status which it well deserves for a long time now. Before any prejudices are made let us support ourselves with a few facts:
Following are 2 survey done on the T-schools in India:
http://www.dqindia.com/content/top_stories/2005/105052101.asp
http://www.india-today.com/itoday/20010521/cover.shtml
Both these surveys do not rank UICT even among the top 20 schools. This is most probably because UICT never made the effort to participate in these surveys. This elucidates that we lack in maintaining relationships with the media. All of us are aware of the power of the media, why not tap it when we believe that we are worth it?
All leading institutes in India have their own media cell, an independent body that maintains its media relations. UICT does not have one. The few articles that were ever published which feature UICT have been glorified within the institute so much so that sometimes we students think it belittles the achievements that UICT has made over the span of the past 72 years.
3. Our website http://www.udct.org is among the worst websites among all engineering institutes in India. Not only do the IITs have amazing websites but even smaller colleges like MIT, Pune have very interactive websites. The problem is not funds, definitely.
The survey of top colleges mentioned that IIT, Khargapur spends a whooping 1.77 lakh per annum on each of its 1,200 students. The budget of the biggest cultural event in our college the Funtech is less than that.
We are UICTians. Students who are supposed to be on par with any IITian. We deserve recognition not only in our field but also amongst the general public. We have the skills. Why not flaunt them? Being in UICT is no doubt the most pleasurable experience we have had but what would add to that experience would be not having to explain to others what UICT stands. We do have a felling of being from a great institute why not get that feeling as a response from people on hearing our institute’s name.
If a survey is made to rate the administration we might probably get one or two stars on five. The following review can be referred to:
http://www.mouthshut.com/product-reviews/UDCT-925002384.html
It is not exactly a good experience being in the UICT office. Unless we have a smoothly functioning and efficient administration we will never have proper recognition because that is the first thing that the general crowd comes in touch with when they come to UICT. Judgements are made, immediately.
The aim of the forum is to overcome the above deficits. Unless firm actions are taken it will grow to become a Herculean task in the future. The forum was made on a networking site http://www.orkut.com/ which boasts of 1000+ UICTians past and present. The awareness forum has a total of 247 past and present students of UICT. We have a work force of 12 members in the college now, who will recruit more members for work. We have charted out a tentative plan on how we will go about achieving this. We will act on it with your due permission. The plan has been described below:
1. Now that the discussions and expatiation is over and we are about to start work we would like to rename UICT Awareness Forum to the UICT media cell. The media cell will handle relationships with the media. It can be a part of the students body or an independent body
2. The various things that can be taken up by the media cell can be setting up stalls in various fests that take place, handling finances for the various events in the college, getting sponsors, managing the website, and such other jobs.
3. Formation of a “Community Service Centre” within our college. It can be handled by the student’s body and can take up various social work projects in and out of the campus. This will boost moral building amongst the students and also help us popularize among people.
4. The alumni of UICT are its biggest asset. We need to tap the power. We are unaware of the actual figures given by the alumni but these are just ideas. UICT media cell can lend its hand in helping.
5. With UICT media cell functioning we can plan grander events than ever before. Funding will be much higher than before because of the recognition. UICT media cell can also help in maintaining cordial relationships with the sponsors which will in turn help us for future prospects (something we lack).
6. The media cell can help in arranging any event that concerns UICT. It can direct students in the college to participate in various events on throughout the year. It’ll be much more than just a notice board. It can interact with the students interested.
These are the main things that the cell can work on. I sincerely hope that we are given the opportunity to start this. Your suggestions are needed on the issue. We are working for UICT, and at no cost will we let our Alma mater down.
Thanking you in anticipation,
On behalf of UICT Awareness,
Akshat Rathi

HI AKSHAT!!!!
I totally agree to you on this topic. i would like to share this though…
When i was confused bout taking admission in this college i tried to ask some medical students bout its repu(my mistake!!!!) they said they havent even heard of this college!!!! When i finally took admission on the advice of a alumni (saying that is one of the best institutes in this country), i proudly started voicing out that i am in one of the finest institutes of the country! to my dismay none of them even seem to know where it is! Some who knew wondered when did our coll introduce Pharmacy!
if anyone asks me where my college is i am compelled to say ‘opposite Khalsa or VJTI’
I sicerely hope things do improve! and this is a start!!!!!!!!!!!
Hello, when students have to take decision regarding which college to join, they generally do some research on d net. So it would be damn helpful if you post the placement statistics of UICT like salary and list of companies.
I understand your position and I was in your place not long ago. We have raised this issue throughout the four years while I was there. Some work was done but not much. This year they have taken the initiative to compile a more comprehensive list of this kind. You may want to get in touch with vg.gaikar@ictmumbai.edu.in for this information. Hope it helps. If not, do get back to me. I’ll try my best.
hi akshat,
i am a udct aspirant.from my aieee scores , i am likely to be qualified for chem engg in nit trichy(no.1 nit).i am also likely to qualify for the specialization courses in udct(polymer, pharma, dyestuff, s.coating etc.).i don’t stand a chance of getting core chem engg. in udct. i am confused as to what to choose b/w specialisation courses in udct and core chem. in nit.
it would be of great help if u can guide me on this.
though this is an awareness discussion forum , i am using this to reach out to you as i am in absolute need of proper guidence.
thanks,
sugirtha
Core chem engg and chem tech courses have some similar subjects but not many. If you are interested in core chem engg, you should choose NIT but if specialisations interest u then UICT is a really good place. Placements are not the greatest but they are competitive. If you want to study abroad all chem tech specialisations can take you to really good universities. You can also change subjects after finishing at UICT, it’s not difficult. I went from Pharma Tech to Organic Chemistry.
DEAR AKSHAT,
MY SON MR. KESHAV KABRA(aieee AI rank 3510) TOOK ADMISSION IN UDCT(B. CHEM. ENG.)MUMBAI.WE BELONG TO JODHPUR AND HAVE PREFERRED THIS COLLEGE OVER THE VARIOUS NITs AND THE MOST PREFERRED BRANCHES SUCH AS CS OR ITs. CAN YOU GUIDE US REGARDING THE SCOPE OF JOINING THIS INSTITUTE.
THANKS AND RGARDS
ARVIND KABRA
Dear Mr. Kabra,
B. Chem Engg. is the most sought after course in ICT (or UDCTand ) I have no doubt that Keshav (if he studies hard in the four years of the course) will have no doubts about career prospects. Almost all the students get very good jobs or universities to study at. You have made the right choice, no doubt.
Regards,
Akshat
I wanted to know how are placements at specialization courses in udct(polymer, pharma, dyestuff, s.coating etc.)
I can only give you information from 2008. Every year while I was there they got better so there is all the chance that they may have improved since. Almost everyone I know off was placed the starting salaries were not always brilliant but a lot also depended on how you scored and took the time during engineering to gain the soft skills to be employable. In specializations the best salary I can remember was Rs. 6 lakhs pa and I guess the worst was Rs. 2.5 lakhs pa (very approximate figures).
Is branch change possible?
Is it worth joining?
Which should be the preferrence among them seeing mainly the scope?
And which branch has least Organic Chemistry?
The least organic chemistry amongst them probably is in textiles but generally that is preferred last. Dyes has the most organic chemistry, pharma, polymers, surface coating and oils have the same amount of it. Branch change is generally not possible. You have to decide if it is worth joining. It helped me to be who I am.
Dear Akshat
As mentioned in your posts, even i was not fully aware of the greatness of the institution, inspite of the fact that i stay very near the institution. I appeared for the counselling round at coep pune for ICT and was offered the FTPT course and as i did not have enough awareness( i still do not have much), i declined the offer and subsequently applied for the CAP rounds. I am also appearing for the second round admission at ICT and the seats on offer are for Dyestuff, FTPT and Pharma. Please help me making the correct choice this time. Furhter, i have also applied for the Pharma CAP and as per the merit list I stand a good chance of getting B.Pharm at ICT. How is the B.Pharm at ICT and how does it compare with the B.Tech courses.
Dear Sandhya,
I am glad you are considering ICT. It is a good place to study. Also, if you are living very close to the institution then it is a big plus as you don’t spend hours travelling.
BTech and BPharma courses are quite different as different as engineering and pharmacy can be. But in BTech Pharma there are few subjects that are covered in much more depth in BPharma. During my time the preferences were in order of Pharma, Foods (probably that’s what u mean when u say FTPT) and then dyestuff. I reckon that all courses have their own merits and are quite on par with each other. I think one should decide on a subject based on their interest in the subject area. The ICT prospectus should give you a brief idea about subject area. Hope that helps.
Cheers!
Dear Akshat,
Thanx for the reply. FTPT, i guess stands for Fibers and Textitle processing technology. Can you please guide me if that would be a good option to consider.
Hi Akshat,
Nice to see that you have been a fine acting counselor at your blog-site. I really appreciate the language you are using/drafting method while replying the queries and the specificity of the content provided. Hope you are not losing any worthy time while doing this job in your current uni.
I do not know how many other alumnus would join you, but keep it up and let me know if you require any help.

Hey Dipen,
Thanks for the kinds words. You are right, it does take a bit of time to be able to respond to this but if it helps someone make decisions which will change their lives, I think it is worth it.
I am pretty sure you can contribute to this. I will email you with details.
Cheers!

hello akshat,
i’m pursuing my BE chem . i want to get into UDCT. what is the eligibility criteria and what exams should i give ?? how about C.tech in pharmaceutical sciences ?? n do u think its that difficult to get in there ?
Excellent job you are doing Mr Akshat. Very pleased to see you blog for MUICT. My son has appeared AIEEE and expect AIR of about 10000. Can he get admission B Chem? Also what were last yr’s Cut offs for various courses…
I am afraid there is no way to tell. I have no idea about last year’s cut-offs. But I think you should definitely try. I suspect BTech would be definitely possible.
PS: I am glad that the blog could be of some help to you.
my air in aieee 2011 is 32912 and my merit no inn final merit list of aieee counselling is 215 do i hold any chance of gettin a seat in uict. please reply !!!! no problem if its in last round. and can i get b chem engg in this college wid these marks??????
I wish I could help but I am afraid I have no idea. May be you should contact one of the young alums to ask?
Hey Akshat
Since you are heading the ICT blog (awareness campaign). I thought of bringing something to your notice which you may find interesting and I think could be important to highlight that ICT has played and continues to play a critical role in Indian chemical industry.
ICT is planning to open a second branch in Gujarat and I guess thats due to the growing focus of the state in chemical industry.
http://www.downstreamtoday.com/news/article.aspx?a_id=35472
ICT-Mumbai may set up a branch in Gujarat as Gujarat plans to become a chemical hub of India and world. Its looks unlikely in short term but it is possible.
Cheers

Thanks. I have updated the ICT in the media page with this link: http://akshatrathi.wordpress.com/ict-in-the-media/
Do we have to choose the site like oils, textiles, plastics, etc etc in UDCT.My CET score is 155 and i want B Chem there Can i get it??? I m confused about wht to take oils or textiles or etc etc plzzz do help
Hi Ankit,
I’ve said this before and will say again. Look at the curriculum and go to the field you like more. There is scope in every field, but you will be able to make the most of it only if you enjoy doing what you do.
Hey, You are doing a great job man, keep it up.
The thing I wanted to ask is whats the difference between BChem Engg and Btech, Both are engineering degrees right?
For Btech Oils do I get this degree “BTech in Chemical technology with specialization in oils” or “Btech in Oils technology”
I am quite into joining ICT, can you help me with some other info too?
Hi Mihir,
Glad to be of help. At ICT, you are given the BTech in ‘specialized’ technology. Yes, both are engineering degrees. One has a lot more focus on only chemical engineering, whereas the other has chemical engineering as 60% (approx) of its curriculum and the rest is specialization. Let me know what other questions you have.
thk u 4 ur advice
Good job,buddy.
Actually,i dont have a clear idea about b.chem.engg.My rank permits me to get it.But,i want to know the difficulty of the course since it is more research oriented.I am more comfortable with theory than practicals. Can you please tell me about your student life out there?
Hi Shiven,
This might give you a good idea of what student life was during my time at ICT. Chem Engg can be more theoretical, if you would like it to be. During our time there wasn’t a lot of choice for courses but things have changed now.
Hi..
I’m Sujanitha and my AIEEE 2012 score is 142. My merit no is 382. do i stand a chance for counselling?
Hi Sujanitha,
I am sorry but I can’t help you with this. You may want to go to the institute and speak to someone in the 2nd year. It has been a while since I left so I don’t have a direct contact to give you.
bro,u are doing a fantastic work.there isn’t much information online regarding the cut-offs for chemical engineering and placements in ict after doing bachelors in chemical engineering.i would be really grateful to you if you can give me some info on this…i’m done with my twelfth now..i’m in a dilemma now to choose between nit and ict…
Hi Aprameya,
This should give you information about placements/studies abroad after B. Chem. Engg. I can’t tell you much about cut-offs because I am not involved in that process.
Hi Akshat and all,
Hope this may be helpful to you. Last yr my son got admission in B Chem engg in 3rd round. His AIEEE rank was AIR 7248. It was closed at about 8500 rank. His Rank in ICT merrit list was 50. If someone wishes to have more info can contact in this foram. Great job Akshat…
hi my name is vrushal my aieee score is 159 and ict merit no. is 318. last time btech textiles closed on aieee score of 101 can i get admission for textiles this year
Hi Vrushali,
I am sorry but I cannot help you with this information. It is best you speak to some students who are still in college.
you should get it….
akshat its vrushal not vrushali can u give any contact details of students those are in college right now
hi friends can you guide me on the future prospects of textiles tech.can i expect good career in this field please give brief explaination
hi akshat please help me.i have to choose between UICT textiles & LIT NAGPUR chemical engg.I dont want to do just btech in any course i want to do further studies like mtech or MS.if i take UICT textiles then mtech in chemical engg will be possible for me & if possible it will be easy for me because my btech is from textiles tech? plz help me.sanjay sir plz share your thoughts
Hi Vrushal,
I cannot speak for comparing courses because I know nothing about LIT. What I do know, though, is that ICT is a place full of smart and motivated people. It gives you lots of opportunities and there is no other place in India who’s chemical education is as good. If you look through the pages here, you will realise what kind of places students of various courses go to. It’s only a glimpse into what ICTians are like.
Additionally, I’ll point you to this article that I wrote a little while back. Hope this helps.
Best,
Akshat
Hi Vrushal,
I think ICT is certainly better college. If u wish you can contact my son Shishir at shishir.deshmankar1992@gmail.com who is in 2nd yr B Chem at ICT.
hello
I want to have evaluation of oils, oleochemicals & surfactant tech or FTPT in ICT vs chemical engg in LIT NAGPUR which one should i prefer for my further studies & future prospects
Hi Akshat,
I have got Btech dyes at ICT . I love organic chemistry a lot and wanted to know, which of the branches has maximum organic chem so that i can chose that branch, if possible in the internal shuffling round. Also, after doing Btech Dyes is there a possibility to do MS in chemistry (pure science) later on?
Dyes has the most org chem and there is plenty of opportunity to do MS/PhD after dyes, as many many students have done before you.
Best of luck and have lots of fun in ICT.
That clears a lot of doubts. Thanks a lot !!
